I have long wanted an iPhone. Who wouldn’t? I believe even after more than half a year of its launch, the iPhone buzz is pretty much still on and at least on everybody’s top 3 wish list. After many awards, and great reviews and critics alike, has iPhone really deliver what was promised?
To start with I still didn’t get one. I am a Windows Mobile user and have this love hate relationship with it (don’t all Windows users?). This because I can connect to the internet from my laptop by just synching my 3G data plan to my laptop via Bluetooth and use my phone as a modem. I know some might argue that you don’t need laptops when you have an iPhone but typing using the virtual keyboard is a pain. Plus I have giant fingers which will also key in ‘W/R’ when I intended to key in ‘E’. How about MMS? You have 3rd party, yes and most valid argument of all - who uses MMS? but the fact remain that it lacks a component even a cheap Nokia phone offers.
More downs
Garmin has been my favourite satellite-navigation system. It locks in fast and support is good. So does Google Maps with A-GPS right? No. Satellite coverage is wider and is also available in remote areas of the country. You don’t need a 3G dataplan to detect where you are.
There has been complaints on incompatibilities but which phone doesn’t? It’s just that, we expect more from the winner of Phone of the Year Award. Plus, it’s a little too bulky for the pocket, don’t you think?

Promises Met
The main reason I would love to get my hands on the iPhone is the cool form factor. It has this shiny look and cool functions like the image gallery viewer when you can just double tap to zoom and make circular motions to rotate it. You can also tilt it to change lanscape / portrait view. That’s what I initially want iPhone for. It’s a revolution and has since change the trend for mobile phone user experience with HTC, Samsung and now even Nokia joining the rich UI experience bandwagon.
However, with the release of SDK 2.0, I am awed and THAT’s what I want the iPhone for. It practically has anything and everything you ever needed and it’s all supported in 1 iPhone application. Even Obama’s US presidential campaign has iPhone apps to track his progress and supporters to interact and even donate.
Facebook, the world’s largest and growing social media site also offers iPhone apps which you can get message, notifications and friends updates, reply to them and do many more. This goes to almost all iPhone apps - YouTube, GMail, etc.
Push email is supported and the cool thing about Apple is, rather than fight, they joint Microsoft. By realizing that most users uses Windows based PCs or laptops, all iPhone 3G data can be sync and updated through MobileMe - a multi platform that enables iPhone users to sync files on either Mac or Windows. Another cool revolution after the famous BootCamp.
It has change mobile phone from just a communication device to a social device where favourite music, videos, friends, business, office are all merged into one.
Verdict
In iPhone revisited, it’s fair to say that iPhone does deliver what is promised and intended. While some still compares iPhone with whatever new phones that is put on the market by other manufacturers, some are fair while some are not. This is because iPhone is in a different category. Personally, I feel that the iPhone is a multimedia device with enable phone function.
Is it time for me to grab that an iPhone yet? I think it should still stay in my top 3 wishlist. Unless of course, somebody wants to cross that one out for me
