Nokia E63 - Great Power Not Necessarily Come with Great Price

by CoolPhone on January 1, 2009

Nokia_E63_ruby_redWhen Nokia launches the business E-class, I am not always impress with the designs. It looked a tad boring and ‘old’. But when they launched the E66 and the E71, I went bonkers. It was way too cool (either that or I’m getting older and so does my tastes for mobile phones) and straight away thinking of ditching my 8 months old HTC P3600i PDA phone. If it not had been for the very low trade in price, I would have swapped it in a blink.

But now, building on the success of the Nokia E71, the company’s flagship messaging device, the Nokia E63 brings the QWERTY keyboard form factor to a broader audience at a great price. The Nokia E63 is expected to begin shipping in the coming weeks for an estimated retail price of EUR 199, before taxes and subsidies.

How is this possible? Well, just like the Samsung Behold which was thought to be the trimmed down version of the Samsung Omnia which justifies its low price, Nokia too adopted the same strategy. To start with, Nokia replaces the E71 metal body with a plastic casing. The built-in AGPS chip is also not available. However, all of the other power functions available on the Nokia E71 is also made available in the Nokia E63.

Nokia E63 Key Features

  • QWERTY Keyboard form factor
  • One-button control for emails, contacts and switching from work to personal social network view
  • FREE 1GB online storage
  • Powerful business and entertainment functions
  • Price : € 199 before tax and subsidy

Through Nokia’s research, they found that people want a device that deals with both their personal and professional lives, but helps them to separate the two. Therefore, with this in mind, the E63 is born.

Phone
The Nokia E63 feels nice in hand. Its 113 x 59 x 13 mm dimension enables a set of QWERTY keyboard for easy texting - suitable to reply e-mails, SMSs, blogging and even IM replies. Its TFT screen 16 million color display offers clarity especially for text reading. Even the response is fast and no lag detected even playing large video files. It came in 2 colours - Ruby Red and Ultramarine Blue.

It came with 110 MB internal memory and supports up to an additional 8GB microSD (TransFlash) hot swappable. It has a touch sensitive navigation wheel. As connection is important for both work and personal alike, users can connect with WAP, HSDPA, EDGE and also wi-fi (802.11 b/g).Nokia_E63_ultramarine_blue

Business
The E-series is targeted as a business category phone. Just like its superior clone, Nokia E63 offers business functions which can be accessed by just a touch of a button. Contacts, emails, calendars and internet are all easily accessible. It also supports push e-mail for Exchange.

The Nokia E63 also includes Files on Ovi, a service where people can get remote access to their PC files even when their computer is offline. Anyone buying the handset will have access to 1GB of online file storage for free.

Social Network
1GB online storage is too much for just spreadsheets and word files. Fill the rest of it with pictures of friends from their Flickr,Fotopages or even blogs. Store rich media files which is supported by the E63. Update your status through Twitter or blog. All this is accessible by just a touch of a button and you will be able to access personal and work files seamlessly.

Oh, you need camera to photoblog and the Nokia E63 comes with a 2.0 CMOS camera for video calls and a 3.2 megapixel camera that can take pictures up to 1600×1200 pixels and video capture at 15fps in QVGA.

Verdict
Following the success of the Nokia E71, this one should be well accepted too with a big plus point of being cheaper than the E71 but offers the best functions. I doubt that a GPS and metal body really bothers anyone with the price it offers. This looks like a sure hit, but we will have to see of Nokia can play its pricing card right especially considering the current economic situation.
