Mobile Phone of the Year - 2008

As getting connected and communication becomes more important, so does the role of mobile phones. As the social web expands, so does the capabilities of mobile phones – shifting its role from just a phone to a complete telecommunication and entertainment device. It is not hard to see then, why mobile phone too had garnered a staunch follower, through brand loyalty to continue supporting their brand, hence always getting themselves into the embattlement of the current polemic of which phone is better. The casualties are iPhone who had set such a high standards with its smooth innovative navigation and functionalities. Windows Mobile, who had over the years being supported and almost unchallenged had also increased their game trying to see off the challenge post by Apple.

Who is the real winner? Only an award can tell. An award that is given through the support and vote from various mobile users could at least be the beacon of popularity and customers’ satisfaction. That is the idea when What introduces their What Mobile Awards 2008. About 3,000 readers vote for their favourite mobile device through mail and online vote according to the categories suggested by What Mobile magazine.

Held in Shoredicth House, East London on the 23rd October 2008, the event which was filled with entertainment and stand up comedy, were attended by 160 mobile industry guests. I don’t think the losers will party throughout the event though, as they need to run to the drawing board to win for next year’s event.

What Mobile editor Jonathan Morris said: “Our awards have continued to grow year on year, thanks to the increasing support from readers and online users that appreciate being able to give their own opinion on the products and services they use. He also added that such award, that is voted by the mobile users are more important than a traditional judging system.

Will iPhone win the coveted Mobile Phone of the Year Award?

The winners of that night is Sony Ericsson which won Best Music Phone and Best Manufacturer award, Vodafone won the Best Network award while Apple (this will perhaps not come as a surprise to many of you) won the best MP3 Player through iPod Touch and the coveted Phone of the Years award through iPhone 3G.
