Motorola Mobile Phones to Run Windows Mobile and Google Android

by CoolPhone on October 31, 2008

As was already mentioned earlier, future mobile has only one way to go and that is OS driven. True enough, Motorola who once had a prominent market share in mobile phone market, had to cut its mobile phone division due to substantial decrease in sales. Though the design and features offerd by Motorola was not that bad, especially the Razr V series but it lacked that extra bit while the rest of the competitors are starting to introduce higher end mobile phones. This has forced Motorola to cut its overall costs from US$800 million to US$600 million, while toying with the idea of selling its mobile phone division to another company. This might cause about 3,000 employee being cut by Motorola.

Key points:

  • Motorola is cutting its overall costs from US$800 million to US$600 million potentially causing 3,000 employees losing their job due to significant loss in market share.
  • Realizing the need for better feature phone, new chief of mobile devices Sanjay Jha  announced that high end Motorola mobile phones will run on Windows Mobile (he hinted on WM 6.5) by June 2009 and Google Android by end of 2009 by adding I think there are significant new added features which will help the platform.”
  • Strong community support to cater various user needs is the main reason why Motorola should’ve taken this step long ago.

Realizing this, Sanjay Jha, Motorola’s new chief of mobile devices, said Motorola will no longer develop phones on some operating systems, including Symbian and will focus on Windows Mobile platform for the higher end phones. It is revealed that it will be somewhere on the second half of 2009 - coincidently around the same time Windows Mobile 6.5 was expected to be launched.

The emerging need for a community that supports and caters a specific need by the users, has forced mobile OS developer to introduce SDK. With SDK, developers can support the OS, hence increasing the OS popularity among users, reflecting in strong demand by phone companies. Windows Mobile has strong developers community and this could be the basis of Motorola planning a marriage with Windows Mobile, while adding “I think there are significant new added features which will help the platform.”
