Latest Mobile Phone Trends

by CoolPhone on September 30, 2008

It seems not long ago since Nokia 3210 was making a storm into the mobile phone market by offering an antenna-less mobile phone. It’s so cool that the trend of mobile phone designs changed. Each phones come antenna-less after that. It has set a new benchmark for mobile phones design. After that, it needs to be slim and the trends go on and on

So, let’s look at the fundamental features of today’s (as in August 2008) fundamental features in mobile phones, and why are they fundamental.

Nokia 3210 change mobile phone designs

Nokia 3210 is the first phone without antenna and change mobile phone designs ever since

• OS Driven
Many of the phones offered today are driven by a specific Operating System (OS). As user requirements increases, there’s also an emergence of developers support and 3rd party programs, which needs to run on a platform. 3 of the most popular mobile phone OS available on the market right now are Windows Mobile (All HTC series, Samsung Omnia, all ASUS series, etc), Symbian OS (Nokia, Sony Ericsson, LG, etc) and also Mac OS (Apple iPhone). Others would be RIM Blackberry, Linux and Palm OS. There’s a new OS coming from Google – Android which has caused some vibes over the internet and mobile world for the past year or so but more on that later.

Why do we need this? One simple reason is, you can install whatever applications that suites your needs. You need better calendars, organizers, phone tracker, phone locks, mobile Quran, mobile Bible, games, you name it. All of the stated OS are fully supported by their own developer community and catered by various mobile application companies.

Which is better you asked? We’ll talk about that later too. On the mobile OS comparisons.

Apple iPhone is the best phone around especially its connectivity

Apple iPhone 3G boasts great multimedia experience with its seamless data streaming

• Convergence of various high bandwidth networks

Simply talking over the phone is not enough. We want data connection anywhere, anytime at the lowest cost possible. That’s why it is a must have for all phones to come with HSDPA connection capabilities and Wi-Fi.

Why do we need this? In places with Wi-Fi connection, users can have a good high speed connection for free, whereas for 3G data connection, some charges might be incurred by the local telcos, but still, people are able to get connected on to the internet. With these capabilities, it can also turn the phone into modems so that you can surf at the power and convenience of a normal pc / laptops, anywhere.

• Slim, slick, elegant design
First impression is so damn important. A shiny thing always attracts the eye. Imagine you go to a party and when people see you answering your call with a slim, shiny, black thing on your hand. Isn’t it cool?

Why do we need this? It looks cool. Especially when you are in a business meet up, having a trendy mobile phone design rather than those bulky, black, colourful (God forbid) phones will appeal your business associates and give the impression that you are aware of the latest technology and business is doing great!

Omnia is the latest Windows Mobile PDA phone

Samsung Omnia offers great functionality like embedded GPS on top of slick, elegant design

• Embedded GPS
Getting to places that you only knew by address is simpler now. For instance, with Garmin, you just search the nearest town of your destination and find the specific place as stated by the address. You can also search new places. Either way it’s so damn cool and freaky too (seriously, when you first time use it, you’ll feel like being stalked).

Why do we need this? Not all places offered high bandwidth data connection. So using 3G based navigation might be disabled at certain places. By having an embedded GPS in your mobile phones, by using the satellites, you can still find your way around.

HTC Touch Pro is equipped with Touch Flo system

The HTC Touch Pro offers great memory (RAM/ROM) to cater the vast potential of applications it can run on top of its cool Touch Flo application

• High memory
Again, this is only logical. User needs are always increasing. You want a phone, that can browse the internet, play games, music and 1001 media, MP3 ringtones, GPS functionality, remote desktop on top of a manager application runs everything smoothly like the HTC Touch Flo system. To handle all this jobs, a phone needs a high memory (RAM and ROM).

Why do we need this? To ensure that all of your applications run smoothly and save you hours of agony and cursing.

There you go. The top 5 most important features to have in mobile phones right now. Well, some might add QWERTY keyboard, high megapixel cameras but you have touchscreen and digital camera for that. Bluetooth, e-mail applications should come default as the phone itself.
